She’arim BiTefillah
The same process of dividing each aspect of Pesukei D’Zimrah into small manageable parts, can be done with all of Pesukei D’Zimrah. Let’s examine Hodu and break it down into sections, so that we can appreciate how each concept is a world in itself.
We begin Hodu Lashem – this is a concept within itself. Thank you Hashem! We have so much to thank for, and we can concentrate on any one of them. Thank you for our eyes, our ears, our lives, our parnassah, and endless details of our existence. Then we say, Kiru bi’shmo, call out His name. At this point we are not thanking Hashem, rather we are taking up a totally different form of Avodas Hashem. We are going up on a platform and announcing His existence to everybody!
We then say, Hodi’u ba’Amim, let all the nations know. Let’s picture this: This means we’ve become famous speakers, being flown all over the globe, New York, France, England, India, China, South Africa, to give an inspiring speech to world leaders and general populace, all about Hashem and His creations and deeds.
Next, we say Shiru lo, Zamru lo. We are back to our living room, once again praising Hashem, in two very different forms of praise, shirah and zimrah. Each one is unique, and has its own beauty. We will explain the difference soon.
Sichu bichol niflaosav, talk about all His amazing wonders. Picture yourself sitting next to a friend and discussing the niflaos haBorai, whether in the creation of the world, in the human body, or in your daily life.
Hishallelu b’sheim kadsho, take pride and honor in the name of Hashem. This is another integral concept – we have great pride in the fact that Hashem is our father! Just as someone who’s father has achieved something amazing, has become famous through a tremendous action, they take great pride and joy in this, and tell everyone about it – it’s my father! Really! My father! When we talk about Hashem and His achievements – we have to swell up with pride that this is our Hashem! We are His children. He has also guaranteed me, that whenever I need to speak to Him – the door is always open.
This is how all the concepts and shiros and tishbachos in Tehillim that we say in Pesukei D’Zimrah can be broken down into individual parts. One day we can think about one, and the next day another. With a little time and patience, it can become natural – when we say these words these images immediately come to mind, and then we will have such an appreciation for each word, each segment of Pesukei D’Zimrah!

If we can add this amount of reality and complexity to how we daven, how we say Pesukei D’Zimrah, it will become a very enjoyable experience, working our way through all the different connections we have with Hashem. We can begin to realize what Chazal said, kol ha’omer shirah bi’olam hazeh zocheh vi’omrah li’olam habaah.
